A Home Chosen by the Heart,
Honoring a Life Well-Lived
January 6, 2026
Some homes are chosen with logic. Others are chosen with the heart. In the case of Gil and Edith Tanquilut, this was the latter.
The moment that the couple set foot in the property in Antipolo, Rizal, they knew instantly it was meant to be their home. The decision came not from careful calculations, but from a feeling—quiet, certain, and deeply personal. This was where they would build their retirement home.
Today, their single-storey residence basks in the tranquility of nature—a spacious, sun-filled home thoughtfully designed to support the way they live. Because of its high ceilings, rooms awash with generous natural light, and clear glass windows and doors connecting all four bedrooms to a central jacuzzi-slash-pool, the home feels less like a traditional house and more like a private retreat.
The Art of Light Living
From the beginning, the concept was simple yet intentional: comfortable, airy, and built around the way they live, as a couple, as senior citizens.

The layout allows the couple to see across the room, from one bedroom to another, creating a sense of connection even within a large space. Garden, a gazebo, and greenery blur the line between indoors and outdoors, while paintings collected over the years tell the story of a life well-lived.
“This house is a contribution of everybody,” Edith explains. “[We considered] what they want to be part of their home, because they also live here.”

The Tanquiluts admit that the process wasn’t always easy. There were moments of doubt, some trial and error in the planning stage, and changes along the way. But when the house was finally completed, the realization came quietly and clearly: “This was exactly what we had wanted.”

Built with Experience
This was not the Tanquiluts’ first home. Their previous house, designed to accommodate a growing family, had four levels. While beautiful, it became impractical over time as their needs changed. This time, they chose differently.
Everything in the new home is accessible on one level. Steps were minimized to reduce the risk of tripping. Doors were widened, bathrooms made more spacious, and grab bars installed where needed. Anti-slip tiles from Wilcon Depot were carefully selected to ensure safety without compromising design.
Edith shares that she is prone to slipping—an important consideration in planning their new home. Today, she shares that she feels safer and at peace. For the couple, the house is built not just for the present, but for the years ahead—designed with dignity, ease, and security at its core.
Wilcon as a Trusted Partner—Again
To bring their vision to life, the Tanquiluts knew they needed partners who understand they prioritize safety and peace of mind at every corner. They had an architect and contractor to help with the process. Wilcon Depot complemented this process by providing products that met their priorities of safety, quality, and peace of mind.
“We’ve been customers of Wilcon for a long time,” Gil shares. From hospital extensions to their first home, Wilcon had long earned their trust as a reliable partner in building. For this project, many of the outdoor elements—including pool tiles, composite flooring, and outdoor tiles—were sourced from Wilcon Depot. “The prices are very competitive and reasonable,” Gil adds. “We had no problem with the quality, and we’re very satisfied.”
Living near a Wilcon branch also made a difference. When materials were needed urgently, a quick visit to Wilcon Depot Taytay solved the problem. The staff, Gil notes, were consistently accommodating, knowledgeable, and ready to assist. In-store services like the Tile Calculator helped remove guesswork during planning, making the entire process smoother.
What mattered most was the result. As Gil repeated throughout the interview, they were simply “very happy.”
A Place of Openness
Though designed as a retirement home, the Tanquiluts never intended it to feel closed off. Instead, it was built to feel open—both physically and emotionally. A place their children could always return to and call home, and where family and friends would always feel welcome.
The home’s openness encourages togetherness, with spaces designed for conversation, connection, and shared moments—enhanced by sweeping views that guests often admire. It is a home that gives generously, without losing the quiet comfort the couple values.
The Reward of a Lifetime
Asked what the home means to her, Edith answers without hesitation. “It’s a picture of our accomplishments—what we wanted our house to be.”

She jokes that with views this beautiful, the house could never cause stress. Even if they were to live there for only a few years, she says, she would have no regrets. The home already carries enough meaning—and can one day be passed on to their children.
For Gil, fulfillment comes from hearing what visitors say: that the house feels peaceful and light. He feels the same way. “You feel validated,” he says with a smile.

In a home built with intention, care, and trusted partners like Wilcon Depot, the journey ends exactly where it should—peaceful, complete, and just right.
