Nuvali has dramatically changed over the past few years. Beyond being a stop on the way to Tagaytay, the area has steadily grown into a destination of its own, with thriving residential communities and lifestyle centers like malls reshaping how people experience the south. As more families and professionals began calling it home, the demand for places to gather naturally grew alongside it.

Tucked away in the cool, quiet town of Amadeo, Cavite, known as the Coffee Capital of the Philippines, Cafe Carolina feels right at home. Surrounded by trees and framed with generous windows that allow the breeze to go around, the cafe opens itself to both the outdoors and the people who come through its doors. In here, the good coffee and good food are expected, but what surprisingly stays with you is the sense of ease, a feeling that you’re always welcome to stay.
The welcoming vibe embraces you the moment you arrive. The cafe opens itself up to you. Clean windows, cement breeze blocks let natural light pour in, blurring the line between indoors and out. Outside, the space unravels a generous al fresco area where tables are scattered beneath lush greenery and a towering century-old acacia tree. Plants frame every corner, softening the structure and grounding the cafe in its natural surroundings. For the owners and their beloved customers, Cafe Carolina is a place where conversations stretch, cups are refilled, and time just feels kinder. enerous natural light, and clear glass windows and doors connecting all four bedrooms to a central jacuzzi-slash-pool, the home feels less like a traditional house and more like a private retreat.
For Carlo Garma and the rest of the directors behind The Bend, that transformation presented an opportunity. hands-on owners.
“During the pandemic, we were surprised that this area was very booming,” Carlo recalls. “When you think about Laguna, it’s still known for hot springs and vacation. So we wanted to be a bit different.”
Having spent years around Makati’s dining and nightlife scene, the group saw something they felt Nuvali was still missing. There were already plenty of restaurants in the area, but very few spaces that blended elevated dining, live entertainment, and events under one roof while carrying the polished atmosphere commonly found in Metro Manila.
“We wanted to put something from Makati in here. The speakeasy type of bars there, the type of ambiance that’s only found in Makati. We wanted to bring the high-end feel of the Metro here in Nuvali.”
For Carlo and the rest of the directors behind The Bend, that transformation presented an opportunity. hands-on owners.

That vision eventually became The Bend, a three-story destination where guests can enjoy dinner and live music on the ground floor, celebrate milestones in the function hall above, or simply spend an evening with friends in a space designed to linger in.
Three months since opening its doors, the restaurant is now a staple in Sta. Rosa’s growing dining scene. “We’re very happy with what we have, and even our customers appreciate this type of venue here,” Carlo says with a smile.
A Name Hidden in Plain Sight
The name of the restaurant doesn’t come out of nowhere. It was also a challenge they had to overcome in making the project.
“The lot itself is bent,” Carlo reveals. “It’s triangular and curved because it’s literally on the bend of the road.”
Designing within an unusually shaped property meant every square meter had to work harder. The front appears wide enough to welcome guests, while the building narrows deeper into the lot.
The layout allows the couple to see across the room, from one bedroom to another, creating a sense of connection even within a large space. Garden, a gazebo, and greenery blur the line between indoors and outdoors, while paintings collected over the years tell the story of a life well-lived.
“This house is a contribution of everybody,” Edith explains. “[We considered] what they want to be part of their home, because they also live here.”
It surely posed as a setback, one they had overcome. “Inside, we had to make sure it’s still spacious enough. We did it anyway.”
The upper floors were expanded wherever possible, while the ground floor was carefully adjusted with the limitations of the site. Today, despite the unconventional footprint, The Bend has already hosted events with over a hundred guests. Goes to show that thoughtful planning can conquer even the trickiest layouts.
Boldness With The Right Partner
The interiors looked very different when the project first began. It started with modern industrial spaces and Japanese-inspired minimalism, but like many creative projects, the design evolved as construction progressed.
Rather than forcing one design language throughout the building, The Bend embraced elements that complemented one another. Dark wall panels reminiscent of classic lounges sit beside industrial textures, while contemporary baffle ceilings soften the overall look. Equally suited for intimate dinners, corporate gatherings, or late-night conversations over cocktails. In the end, it’s a space that feels timeless without being overly formal.

The same thoughtful approach extended to every material chosen throughout the property. Their team preferred seeing the items in person, comparing textures and proportions before making decisions. “That’s what’s nice about Wilcon,” Carlo shares, “it’s easier to design when you’re actually there. Everything is accessible, and there’s so much variety.”
One visit to Wilcon Depot’s Tile Studio would eventually influence the entire interior palette, one that made them say “Yes, that is it.”
The Verona Raven Large Format Tile became the foundation of the restaurant’s interiors. Its dramatic marble-inspired finish creates the premium atmosphere Carlo had envisioned from the very beginning. Complementing it are Sol Ceramica Avis Polished Floor Tile, Sol Ceramica Plain Ivory Floor Tile and Woodland Maple Caramel Three-Layer HDF Core Flooring, each adding warmth and texture while allowing the darker statement flooring to remain the visual anchor of the space.
Even the restrooms received the same attention to detail. Premium sanitary fixtures including Pozzi Antiva Urinals, Atelier Dubienn Rombo Sinks in Gold and Rose Gold finishes, along with high-quality valves, fittings, and plumbing essentials sourced from Wilcon. These choices helped achieve The Bend’s polished, upscale aesthetic and long-term reliability.
Structural components include P.Tech Balusters used throughout the staircase, completed the space with durability that matched its refined appearance. For Carlo, having a dependable partner matters just as much as having a good idea for business. “It's very nice to have a partner like Wilcon. We never had to worry about stocks. We could simply call our sales agents, ask what we needed, and most of the time they already had it ready. That accessibility really helped us."
Building With Courage
Building The Bend was all about creating a place that people would continue coming back to. They host just about anything: celebrations, spontaneous dinners, live music, or simply because it feels different from anywhere nearby.
Carlo’s advice for aspiring entrepreneurs reflects the lessons they’ve learned along the way. “Don’t rush into things,” he says. “Think about the market. Think about your budget. Starting a business is not that simple. But it really helps when you have reliable partners with you.”
Like the curve in the road that gave it its name, The Bend proves that not every journey follows a straight path. Sometimes, the most memorable destinations are the ones shaped by unexpected turns, careful decisions, and the willingness to create something entirely your own.

"What's important in this space is the heart. Because at the end of the day, it's not the outcome or the amount of coffee you sell. What's important is the relationship you've built and how strong it is. What we’ve been through, we built it here,” shares Dinn.

Asked what the home means to her, Edith answers without hesitation. “It’s a picture of our accomplishments—what we wanted our house to be.”
She jokes that with views this beautiful, the house could never cause stress. Even if they were to live there for only a few years, she says, she would have no regrets. The home already carries enough meaning—and can one day be passed on to their children.
For Gil, fulfillment comes from hearing what visitors say: that the house feels peaceful and light. He feels the same way. “You feel validated,” he says with a smile.
